At the present time i live in Goa but my home address is London UK. I have bought a Reliance Dongle so-called Broadband. Its advertised as 3.1 mbps but it averages out at around 300kbps.Big difference.
At home i have Virgin Broadband.10 mbps unlimited download. Its going to upgraded in 3 weeks to 20/50 mbps.I pay £ 22 per month.£5.50 per week or 400 Rps a week.Reliance do not even have their own dedicated system but piggy back on the mobile phone net works in India. In the UK they would be prosecuted for making false advertising claims. The company would be required to issue an apology and pay loads and loads of money.Indian net users are being ripped off mega style.I cannot under stand why there hasnt been a demonstration against the blatant rip off being enacted by Indian Internet Companies. They are literally printing money and not providing anything in return.

"how frustating it is just waiting for a stupid download to finish-like a full day!"

@Anurag, the problem is worse nowadays because HD 720p/1080p quality videos are the norm nowadays and since our speeds are the same as it was a decade ago, it now takes 2-3 whole days to download a 720p movie and 1080p takes a whole week.

Despite the slow speeds, if the internet was atleast reliable, it would have a consolation but that's not the case either. Frequent disconnection and low speed problems are faced by most Indians.

People in other countries laugh at us when they hear of speeds like this.

@Sumit, I am from Kolkata too and I have experience with local ISPs like Wishnet, Alliance, Meghbela etc. because I have used all of their connection at one point of time or another. But problem with these local ISPs is that they don't have their own distribution center or what you call infrastructure and hence they depend on local cable operators to distribute their connection to customers. Since local cable operators mostly take connection from only one of these ISPs, you cannot choose whom to subscribe to. You have to take whichever ISP they take connection from. So even if everyone in Kolkata wants Wishnet because of their cheap plans, its not possible for all.

I myself was a customer of Wishnet for a few months when my cablewallah used to take their connection but you know these cablewallahs, they are always looking for ISPs with whom they can have bigger profit margins, and that's why they switched to Siti which is some new unknown ISPs launched in Kolkata recently.

Alliance is not bad but their plans are expensive compared to BSNL and Reliance. Meghbela is the worst ISP in probably whole of India. Airtel is pure rubbish if you are a downloaders as they have very low Fair usage limits.

At the end of the day, I am happy with my local cablewallah's net. Paying Rs.2200 for a true 2mbps Unlimited connection, can't ask for more. How local ISPs perform depend much on the local cablewallahs. If they invest in good quality CAT5 cables and switches and inverters, then your experience will be amazing but it can be your worst nightmare if their service is bad.

Hi people,
I am from Kolkata and I am quite astounded to hear all of your bandwidth horrors.
But I must say that I have been lucky as per as Broadband is concerned. Out here
we have Wishnet inc which is installed and serviced by local cable people and bandwidth
is provided by wishnet. Not all cable people are good quite are very arrogant in areas
where people have no choices. But out here in Kolkata we have 3 sub-isp (wishnet, alliance
and Tata) all run in the similar manner. I was initially with Aliance broadband for almost 2 years
having 256 kbps pack. But due to service delays I moved to a bigger cable organization (under wishnet). I chose the Pack 512 kbps and the speed was consistent upto 64 kbps and after seeing the good service around 1.5 years back I upgraded to 2 MBPS unlimited for which the wishnet rate is 2200 but the local guy charges around 500 bucks more for service and maintenance. And I had absolutely no problem paying extra since their service was great except for few request timed out or network cable unplugged glitches. Total amount rounded was 2750 Rs. I got upto 300 kbps download speed and youtube videos played at 360,480 and 720 p that is HD quality without any buffering. Only 1080p had little buffering since it requires 4 mbps or above connection. This is a recent speedtest.net report of my wishnet connection (2.58 mbps download speed meant in speedtest.net around 258 kbps and similar).
Due to good relations with the cable people last month I have been provided a fibreoptic cable direct from their office to my home so no switches involved no coaxial cables. It cost them around 12000 for them but since I am a big customer I was not charged a single penny and in fibreoptic no matter what happned rains, heat, unless there is a server error on their side otherwise the connection will not be disrupted. This is pic link for my speedtest.net result :http://i54.tinypic.com/2hz3eis.png.So I have been indeed lucky with my internet and I have heard that Wishnet is introducing 4MBPS unlimited package so I am going to take it. And the best part is there is no F***ing Fair usage policy, its absolutely unlimited. My bandwidth usage in last 2 months has been almost 80gb which consisted of watching huge amount of streaming videos, downloading pc games, movies etc. So wish you all the best for you people.
Wishnet *****( 5 star)
